Thermal management

Temperature terms, test conditions and lifetime projections describe different parts of LED performance. This educational overview helps explain those distinctions; it does not establish thermal performance, operating limits or lifetime for TaoGroup products.

Their historical standard editions are identified below and are not presented as current compliance requirements.

Locate the temperature in the thermal path

Cree LED's XLamp application note distinguishes the LED junction, a specified solder-point location and the surrounding ambient air. These are different locations along a thermal path. The note describes heat moving through the LED component and circuit board toward a heat sink and then the air. Thermal resistance, expressed in degrees Celsius per watt, relates a temperature difference to thermal power between stated points. A junction-to-solder-point value describes a different portion of that path from a junction-to-ambient value. Source: Cree LED, Thermal Management of XLamp LEDs, CLD-AP5 Rev 5 (PDF).

Keep test data and projections distinct

Lumileds explains lumen maintenance as light-source performance over time. Its discussion of LM-80-08 describes LED-component testing with controlled drive current, LED temperature and surrounding air temperature, with electrical and optical measurements recorded during the test. Its TM-21-11 example uses measured data to project average lumen maintenance beyond the observed test duration. The conditions, duration and standard edition therefore belong with a result: a projection is not an observation of operation for that entire period. Separate component maintenance from luminaire lifetime

In its position statement issued on 9 October 2018, the Illuminating Engineering Society explains that a complete luminaire combines LED components with housing, optics and drive circuitry. Its reliability depends on failure mechanisms beyond the LEDs alone. The statement cautions against using TM-21 component projections by themselves to market the lifetime of an entire luminaire. A lumen-maintenance projection is useful evidence within its scope, but it does not establish the service life of every part of the assembled product. Three questions for a technical review

Editorial synthesis from the references above: which temperature location is reported, what conditions and duration produced the data, and does the claim concern an LED component or a complete luminaire? This is a document-reading checklist, not an installation procedure or a claim that these reports are available for the reviewed TaoGroup records.
