Testing & Quality

Read lighting evidence by asking what was measured, what the result describes and which conditions belong with it. Optical and electrical measurements and color-rendition information answer related but distinct questions.

Identify the measurement and its conditions

The Illuminating Engineering Society's public description of ANSI/IES LM-79-24 covers optical and electrical measurements of solid-state lighting products under standard conditions. Its scope includes light output, electrical power, efficacy, distribution and color or spectral information. The published contents distinguish physical, environmental and electrical test conditions, preparation and reporting. For a document review, keep the measurement object, quantity and stated conditions together rather than carrying a number into a comparison on its own.

Read overall and hue-specific color information

The Illuminating Engineering Society describes ANSI/IES TM-30-24+E1 as a method for evaluating light-source color rendition through numerical and graphical information. It includes overall properties, such as color fidelity and gamut area, alongside hue-specific fidelity, chroma shift and hue shift. A summary value and information about particular hues therefore describe different parts of the same evaluation. This introduction uses only the public description; it does not reproduce the standard's calculation procedures or supply a product assessment.

Use measures and graphics together

The U.S. Department of Energy's TM-30 overview explains that related measures and graphics work together to communicate color rendition. It also describes a calculator that derives metrics from a light source's spectral power distribution, and discusses using the information when considering an application and efficacy tradeoffs. Reading the numerical information alongside its graphics helps keep the evaluation's different dimensions visible; this page does not perform those calculations.

Editorial comparison: a lumens-and-watts entry invites questions about light output and electrical input, including their measurement basis. A color-rendition graphic invites questions about the color information it represents. Neither substitutes for the other. Do not infer TM-30 results from a catalog CRI statement; no such conversion or product result is provided here.

Keep an evidence-reading record

Editorial checklist: before comparing documents, write down these four items.

  1. Object and revision. Identify the exact model, configuration, document and revision being discussed.
  2. Quantity and basis. Retain units, measurement basis and the distinction between a catalog statement and a reported result.
  3. Conditions and method. Record the stated conditions and method edition. Mark omissions as unresolved rather than filling them by assumption.
  4. Question still open. State which claim needs supporting evidence, including its scope and applicability to the item under review.
